Background
The Seniors con Salud project which is lead by a team of consultants and has been sponsored by the Seniors Health Promotion Committee - Ottawa Heart Beat - under Successful Aging Ottawa and the auspices of Salvaide, the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO), Club Casa de los Abuelos and the South East Ottawa Centre. This project also represents a coalition of organizations that are committed to a campaign Age Well for the Health of It! for Spanish speaking seniors.
Seniors con Salud organizes workshops that are dedicated to providing information and improving accessibility to health services for Spanish speaking seniors. Through these workshops, individuals will have a better understanding of health prevention and ways to deal with health problems.
Three workshops on nutrition, stress, and physical activity were held and led by health professionals in 2004. The success of these workshops encouraged Seniors con Salud to promote healthy lifestyles and to reduce isolation through social integration with a new program in 2005. This program expands awareness on health issues by including psychological and social dimensions through four workshops. The program also provides the senior Latin American community with detailed information on resources, programs, and organizations that can be of assistance to them.
Objectives
An improved quality of life for Latin American seniors by developing and delivering effective health promotion through a network of organizations and individuals
Increased participation of Latin American seniors in the Ottawa community by providing training that reduces health problems through professional workshops
Greater access to services for Spanish-speaking seniors by providing information through a second and updated edition of a Spanish guide of the organizations and resources in Ottawa
Improved liaison between community organizations and service agencies in order to better respond to Latin seniors needs by facilitating networks and collaboration
